Saruhasi a Japanese Geochemist was born in Tokyo and graduated from the Imperial Women's college of Science in 1943. She joined the Meteorological Research institute which belonged to the Central meteorological Observatory and worked in its Geological Laboratory. In 1950, She started studying, CO 2 levels in seawater. At that time CO 2 level where not recognised as important and Saruhasi had to develop her own method of measuring them. Her ideas or research mostly focus on acid rain, radio activity speed through Oceans and carbon dioxide level in seawater. Working as a female scientist in the 1950's and 60's, she was the first woman to earn a PhD in chemistry from the University of Tokyo in 1957. She was The first woman elected to the science science Council of Japan in 1980 and first woman to win the Miyake Prize for Geochemistry in 1985.
