Saruhasi a Japanese Geochemist was born in Tokyo and graduated from the Imperial Women's college of Science in 1943. She joined the Meteorological Research institute which belonged to the Central meteorological Observatory and worked in its Geological Laboratory. In 1950, She started studying, CO2 levels in seawater.
At that time CO2 level where not recognised as important and Saruhasi had to develop her own method of measuring them.
Her ideas or research mostly focus on acid rain, radio activity speed through Oceans and carbon dioxide level in seawater.
Working as a female scientist in the 1950's and 60's, she was the first woman to earn a PhD in chemistry from the University of Tokyo in 1957.
She was The first woman elected to the science science Council of Japan in 1980
and first woman to win the Miyake Prize for Geochemistry in 1985.
She won the prize from the society of seawater science in 1993.
Katsuko Saruhashi died at the age of 87 on 29 September 2007 of pneumonia at her home home in Tokyo.
"There are many women who have the ability to become great scientist. I would like to see the day when women can contribute to science and technology on an equal footing with men. "
